Background :
Calcitonin is a peptide hormone secreted by parafollicular cells (also known as C cells) of the thyroid gland in human, and in many other animals in the ultimopharyngeal body. It belongs to the calcitonin-like protein family. It acts to reduce blood calcium (Ca2+), opposing the effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Calcitonin causes a rapid but short-lived drop in the level of calcium and phosphate in blood by promoting the incorporation of those ions in the bones. It is a potent plasma calcium-lowering peptide. Calcitonin has been found in fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Cellular location Secreted
