Background: Apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites occur frequently in DNA by spontaneous hydrolysis, DNA damaging agents or DNA glycosylases that remove specific abnormal bases. ClassII AP endonucleases act to repair this damage by cleaving the phosphodiester backbone. It is primarily located in the nucleus but is also present in mitochondria. This protein may play an important role in both nuclear and mitochondrial base excision repair (BER).
