Background: This gene encodes a bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes thefirst two steps in the mammalian lysine degradation pathway. TheN-terminal and the C-terminal portions of this enzyme containlysine-ketoglutarate reductase and saccharopine dehydrogenaseactivity, respectively, resulting in the conversion of lysine toalpha-aminoadipic semialdehyde. Mutations in this gene areassociated with familial hyperlysinemia.
